slant2plants Newsletter

November 29, 2024

Hi Reader,

I know...normally this Newsletter is waiting in your email box to say Good Morning to you! Well, last night was Thanksgiving and .....

I am glad to share my Friday Fun Newsletter so I can connect with you and share what's new with slant2plants, my health coaching endeavors and some other fun information about healthy living that I hope you will enjoy.

  1. My purple-haired mom is 84 today! She’s only 21 years older than me, and I’m so grateful I got to celebrate with her and my brother’s family last night for Thanksgiving. It’s also the first Thanksgiving in 36 years that I haven’t spent with any of my children. Living away from my kids takes a toll on me—I’m not part of the everyday fabric of their lives, and I miss knowing all their little “comings and goings.” Even with FaceTime (especially those adorable granddaughters!), and speaking with some of them a few times a week, it’s just not the same as being there in person.
  2. Movie or Book highlight: Have you seen Wicked yet? I plan to, but this week I’ve been catching up on TV shows like Shrinking (Apple TV) and A Man on the Inside (Netflix). The latter stars Ted Danson as a spy undercover in a high-end retirement home in San Francisco. At first, I thought it was cheesy, but it grew on me, and I came to appreciate the themes it explored. While binge-watching, I’ve been working on knitting a baby blanket for my next granddaughter—#4! Once her arrival is imminent, I’ll be dropping everything and heading to SoCal to help out for a bit.
  3. This week's recipe(s): I'm hooked on this NYT Caesar Salad Dressing. II stocked up on plenty of vegetables for salads this week and have been using it daily—it’s that good! For Thanksgiving, I made a Mushroom Wellington. I’m a bit of a nonconformist in the kitchen, often looking at multiple recipes and creating my own version. This one was a big success. I believe the secret was using high-quality ingredients—lots of different vegetables, lentils, and, of course, mushrooms. Wrapped in puff pastry and paired with a savory gravy, it was a showstopper. Let’s face it: anything in puff pastry looks impressive and tastes delicious!
  4. Travel Tips: If you’re lucky enough to be traveling during Thanksgiving week, or staying local (like me), try stepping into “tourist mode” in your own area. I joined a Facebook hiking group and found a group hike this weekend at one of my favorite spots—Rodeo Beach in Marin County. I love the idea of attending events someone else has planned. That’s why I’ve enjoyed travel programs with Seatrek, Sound Sailing, REI Travel, Wilderness Travel, and Backroads. Do you have a favorite travel company? Let me know—I’d love to hear about it!
  5. Nutrition Highlight: The Forks Over Knives Black Friday Bundle is an amazing resource! For the price of the Rouxbe cooking class (which both Eric and I took), you get an incredible package of tools to transform your eating habits for longevity and optimal health. Honestly, if I hadn’t already taken the class, I’d snap this up. Even without the class, it’s still a fantastic deal!
  6. Restaurant Review: Have you ever eaten Thanksgiving dinner at a restaurant or hotel? We’ve done it a few times, and it’s a great option, especially if cooking feels overwhelming. Reservations for good spots fill up early, so if you’re thinking about Christmas, plan ahead! We once had a wonderful Thanksgiving meal at the Claremont Hotel in the Bay Area with a large group. Another year, we dined at Akasha in Culver City with a smaller group. If even that feels like too much, many restaurants and high-end markets offer Thanksgiving-to-go meals. Don’t ask how I know!
  7. Destination Highlight: We stayed local this Thanksgiving, but my next planned trip will be to SoCal to meet granddaughter #4 and spend time with her big sister. I can’t wait!
  8. Self-Care Highlight: I recently started using a new product: Mara Vitamin C Serum (Black Friday price!) I’m absolutely in love with it. It feels so luscious, hydrating, and gives me a noticeable glow. It’s become my favorite part of my morning routine—followed, of course, by moisturizer and SPF.
  9. Health Coaching Update: I’m launching a new Monday Night Meet-Up on Zoom: "Sexy in Your 60’s: For Women 50+ Who Want to Be, and Those Beyond Who Still Are!" We’ll kick off discussions about what we want our vibe to be as we continue to enjoy vibrant, healthy, and engaged lives for decades to come. If you’re in this group and want to start building community together, join me on Monday nights at 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time (click the highlighted text to get the Zoom link).
  10. "Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance." Eckhart Tolle
