I'm in Texas!

slant2plants Newsletter

November 15th, 2024

Hi Reader,

I am glad to share my Friday Fun Newsletter so I can connect with you and share what's new with slant2plants, my health coaching endeavors and some other fun information about healthy living that I hope you will enjoy. This weekend we are in Austin, Texas visiting friends.

  1. Personal Update: Do you ever just hit a wall? For me, it’s rare, but when it happens, it hits hard—I have to crawl into bed for a few hours (no, I don’t nap). This happened Saturday after a Friday night with friends over champagne and wine. I wasn’t too surprised; it was quite a week for everyone! I’ve noticed that a glass (or two!) of wine at night often disrupts my sleep, leaving me low on energy and less productive the next day. Women can become more sensitive to alcohol as they age, and I’m no exception. So, at Saturday’s party, I stuck to sparkling water, and I felt much more rested and clear-headed Sunday morning. By Sunday night—our third evening in a row of socializing—I opted again to skip the drinks (with a 7 a.m. coaching session Monday morning!). I woke up early, feeling refreshed and focused, even on a rainy, gloomy Veteran’s Day. Mental note for the future…
  2. This week's recipe:I have a friend who always makes incredible vegan dishes when she hosts. Last weekend, she prepared four different recipes (and she calls that a “casual” dinner!). I’d make them all, but I have to share her Brussels Sprouts Salad (she made it without cheese just for me). I took home the leftovers, and they were even better the next day. This may just be my Thanksgiving contribution…
  3. Travel Tips: Do you have a go-to packing list? Here’s one item I’m glad I remembered: a cable to use in the rental car for Apple CarPlay—a must for navigating a new city, especially at night! For our three-hour flight to Austin, I started listening to Mastering Diabetes on Audible while knitting the baby blanket for granddaughter #4. I also brought along Voltaren and a hand brace for any arthritis and overuse pain. Mastering Diabetes is a great read for anyone wanting to improve insulin sensitivity, whether for managing or preventing Type 2 Diabetes.
  4. Nutrition Highlight: Pumpkin Power! Did you get a chance to check out my special resource, Eat, Glow & Shine: The Ultimate Guide to Pumpkin for Radiant Skin? If you know someone who’d enjoy it, feel free to share: slant2plants.com/pumpkin. I’m loving the Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal I made this week (recipe linked in the post’s photo caption). I even had enough to pack for a late breakfast on the flight. Try it and let me know what you think!
  5. Restaurant Review: After arriving in Austin, we headed straight to Loro Asian Smokehouse and Bar to meet friends for dinner—this place was buzzing! I chose it for the Asian-BBQ fusion, hoping there’d be some vegan options. Although the tofu dish wasn’t vegan, I loved the two salads and side dish we shared. The brisket lovers were happy too!
  6. Destination Highlight: On my first day of Kindergarten at Mar Vista Elementary in West Los Angeles, our teacher gave each student a piece of construction paper shaped like a (rotary) telephone. The assignment was to write down our phone number and exchange it with another student. I wrote mine (213-397-0477) and exchanged it with a cute little strawberry blonde girl named Wendy Miller. Now, 59 years later, we’re here in Austin visiting her and her husband! I’ll be posting travel highlights on Instagram @slant2plants—especially the food. Tomorrow, we’re visiting the LBJ Library and taking a Sunset Cruise, which apparently includes some bat sightings!
  7. Self-care Highlight: With a history of musculoskeletal issues, including back surgery and two hip replacements, I’ve been dealing with tight hamstrings and a temperamental back lately. For this trip, I made sure to have a yoga mat and roller on hand and brought along my strap and resistance band. Staying with a yoga teacher doesn’t hurt either!
  8. Health Coaching Update: I love helping people improve their lives and move forward towards their goals. If you know someone that might be interest in Health and Well-being Coaching, please let them know they can book a DISCOVERY CALL with me.
